Important fragments
I. Pigeons on the intro spread.
Seven doves - seven victims, mentioned in Zoya's story. Grandmother, Uzeir, Khyzir, father, Osman Glashev's wife, and their babies twins.
II. Orange colour.
The comic is made in a monochrome palette with rare yellow-orange accents. This colour is associated with Zoya's family: only the clothes (or the background) of the girl and her parents are shaded in the story.
III. A piece of sugar.
The original story mentions that the grandmother gave Zoya a lump of sugar before bed. In the comic, this small element is retained with the main character until she reaches her mother.
IV. Nose tips.
The inhabitants of Sautu and the soldiers have different shapes of the tips of their noses. The citizens' ones are oval, while the troopers' ones are triangular.
V. Birds & people on the afterword spread.
On the left page of the spread, there is a dead bird, two chicks, Glashev Osman and his eldest daughter. Birds symbolize the deceased family members. The mother passed in the beginning of the story, so the adult bird is also lifeless on the spread. The infant twins died later when the girl tried to take them out of the village, so before the explanation of what happened, they are depicted as living chicks. Victims who were not destined to survive the tragedy.
